Field Visit Highlights : Luxembourg x Humanity & Inclusion

In October 2025, the Embassy of Luxembourg visited two projects led by Handicap International (Humanity & Inclusion/HI), financed by the Luxembourg Development Cooperation:

  1. Unlocking Access to Quality and Affordable Assistive Devices through 3D Technology in Refugee Camps of Rwanda (2023-2024)
  2. Promoting Integrated Child Development and Inclusive Services for All in Rwanda (2022-2026)

The visit took place in the framework of a mission to Rwanda of Ms. Virginie Gilbert, Luxembourg MFA Team Lead for NGOs, and provided a rich opportunity to learn, exchange, and reaffirm Luxembourg’s commitment to support inclusive, community-driven development in Rwanda.

At HVP Gatagara— a pioneer in Rwanda in the provision of educational and rehabilitation services for people with disabilities—the team gained a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities related to the adoption of 3D technology across orthopedic workshops. As part of its work on developing assistive devices, HI is currently testing 3D scanners produced by Artec 3D, a company headquartered in Luxembourg.

At the Kiziba Refugee Camp, the delegation met with beneficiaries of 3D-printed protheses. This collaboration illustrates how public funding and humanitarian expertise can be combined with technological innovation led by the private sector to tackle real-world challenges and deliver high-quality prosthetics & orthotics to refugees & host communities in remote areas.

The delegation also visited a rehabilitation service in a local hospital in Karongi District, where HI-trained physiotherapists work closely with young children living with physical disabilities, as well as with their caregivers. The team witnessed how tailored therapeutic support helps children build mobility, confidence, and independence, while offering families practical guidance and emotional support in their daily lives.

The team finally visited Community Caretakers who play a crucial role in early childhood development, applying innovative and inclusive approaches that help children thrive within their communities. Their dedication and creativity were particularly inspiring and offered valuable insights into community-driven models that could be scaled further.
